Cantabria is a land full of wonderful natural landscapes, with an extensive and rich variety of vegetation. Known worldwide for its prehistoric caves, Cantabria offers us numerous routes to do in the middle of nature.

Among its many routes, We suggest the Santoña Horse Lighthouse Route, where you will enjoy nature until you reach a magnificent lighthouse isolated between the cliffs on the Costa Smeralda.

In the Emerald Coast (1), in Santona concretely, is the famous Horse Lighthouse (2). this lighthouse, which started operating in August 1863 and whose steps were placed by prisoners in the area, is located in a unique enclave, that will make the effort of the walk worthwhile, being able to observe the wonderful view of the cliffs that surround it.

The lighthouse, inactive since 1993, It has an access through a staircase of 685 steps.

It is located at the foot of the cliffs of the Mount Buciero, a peninsula of 600 hectares that preserves the best patch of Cantabrian oak in the country. It forms part of the entrance to the bay of Santoña and the Marismas de Santoña Natural Park, Victory and the Jewel.

this route, can be done for free starting from San Martin Fountain (3), where there are public car parks enabled to park vehicles.

From there, We will go to a perfectly signposted stone path and we will skirt Mount Buciero to the viewpoint of La Punta or Peña del Fraile.

Following the path and after approximately an hour of traveling through this fantastic natural area, we will find a crossroads, that will indicate that to the right we will arrive at our destination. Some 15 more minutes, and we will find the access of the stairs to the lighthouse.

If you don't just want to enjoy the views, from the same lighthouse, we can go down another stairway to access bathers, take a dip and freshen up for the way back.
